I'd recommend a program called trillian. It's a IM (instant messenger) management program. This way you can have one program running but be able to chat on multiple chat clients.

It's so much cleaner to install and looks so much better than the others do.

You will have to register with the other chat clients though. This means going to say icq.com for example and signing up. Same with yahoo and msn.
