Heart nutrition

Dear Majo,

Durum wheat pasta (the typical kind on the shelves) has a little protein in it and some fiber too. also, the condiment will have a little fat in it typically. the presence of protein and fats in the same meal means that the carbs will be absorbed more slowly into the bloodstream... less of a glucose spike, less insulin response, and the liver doesn't rush to store away "extras" into fat.

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low-car...s_and_theories
Quote:
...
foods influence digestion in complex ways (e.g., both protein and fat delay absorption of glucose from carbohydrates eaten at the same time)
...
the U.S. Institute of Medicine recommends a minimum intake of 130 grams of carbohydrate per day (the FAO and WHO similarly recommend that the majority of dietary energy come from carbohydrates).[55][56]
the ultimate key to losing weight is consuming less energy than you put out. this works even when you reduce in a balanced way, without placing severe restrictions on specific nutrient types like fats or carbs. it comes down to simple arithmetic....

to maintain weight :
energy in = energy out.
to gain weight :
energy in > energy out.
to lose weight :
energy in < energy out.
NB: reducing intake too severely, wrt the amount of energy you put out will throw your body into "starvation mode" - your body will adjust its "output" to the lower intake to "preserve itself." result: rather than weight, you will lose energy, concentration etc... aggressive dieting no good.

I believe that when we diet it is better to aim for a well-balanced diet, possibly trying to improve our eating habits overall. In my case I probably eat too few veggies compared to other foods, so i have been trying to increase my veggie consumption.

Majo, i say, celebrate your food. you can lose weight without making yourself crazy. you have enough in your life that puts pressure on you without adding to that the deprivation of healthy foods you enjoy.
