It's Easter on the Porch...
What's that baby, oh, so you want to know about an Easter I remember? Ok. Well, when I was 13 my Mother promised I could wear heels, and stockings. I was so excited because it was that year I was 13. My Mother made me this dress that was all tiny pink flowers. It was straight til it got just below the hips, then it flared just enough to give it folds and fell just below the knees. My parents didn't allow me to wear anything above the knees. I was so excited, I was gonna git to wear heels, even though they could only be 1 inch, anything higher wuzn't proper.
That Sunday morning I hurried to get my 'take yo time' don't care ifn my brothahs are hollern bath. I took special care to brush my really long black hair until it wuz as shiny as black boots. My Momma came in with my dress and a special treat for me with my shoes, stockings. Real, silk stockings!! I just near had one of Aunt Lizzie's tizzy fits I wuz so excited! While I wuz figuri on how to keep them up, she pulled out this brand new garter belt. I just thought I had turned 18 stead of 13.
I put on my best silk underthings and then I put on that garter belt, I very carefully pulled on those silk stockings with my new white gloves so I wouldn't put a run in them. I put on my new heels, put on my new dress, brushed my hair and put on my new white, wide brimmed hat with the pink ribbon. Daddy told me how pretty I was and off to my grandmother's we went for church.
My grandmother told me how pretty I was and I was thinking, ifn I could go into church barefoot. We all got to the church and walking across the churchyard with oak tree roots, pine cones, rocks and every other obstacle imaginable became my nightmare in heels. This being the very first time wearing heels and not thinking to practice, I must have looked like giraffe walking on ice. lol I finally made it inside the church and of course we were sitting on the first pew...no honey chile, at the front of the church. I was sure that each eyeball in the place was watching as I staggered, stumbled and looked looked like the local drunk on Satiday night. I finally made it to the pew and sot myself down so hard the whole pew shook.
I was so thankful to be sitting, I didn't even mind my brothah wuz next to me. I was listening to the preacher and I began to feel uncomfortable, something just didn't feel right. I quietly got up and quickly exited out the side door quicker than a cat in a roomful of rockin chairs. I went to the outhouse and low and behold my Aunt Fannie's underwear one of the snaps had come loose on the garterbelt. It would have to be in the back! I finally got it fixed and as I was snapping the stocking back to the belt my fingernail went all the way through the silk ruining the stocking. To my horrible and utmost dismay I watched as the line ran all the way down to my ankle.
I knew I couldn't hide, someone would come lookin fer me, so I did the only thing I could. I pulled off those stockings, my shoes and went back inside. I quietly entered the building, they were prayin, so I jest slipped right back where I wuz sittin. After a few minutes, those snaps on that garterbelt began to dig into my thigh and I didn't feel so high and mighty let me tell ya.
I wuz wigglin, squirmin like a worm ready fer bait. Church wuz soon over and jest as soon, I ran to the car, reached up under that purty dress and bout tore that belt off.
Well, chile, sometimes we see things we think we want. We think we can't live without and when we get them, it ain't what we thought. It's like that ole saying grass always greener, but if you ain't got no grass, be happy...cause it means you ain't gotta buy a lawn mower and cut grass.
You get on in there and bring that tray of sweets out here. I'll get the tea and lemonade...feel that breeze baby? That's nature's way of giving us a push. Yes, you can have ice cream on your chocolate chip.
Yes, it will be a fine Easter, well...let's save that story for another time, hmm?
Momma Loves You!
