I find that getting outdoors and immersed with the sounds and activities of the outdoors. Rather than running, just take casual walks with a hat and sun glasses. Fishing can be a safe level of stimulation. It is also something you can do with your kids.
If the radio has pounding or rock or mostly non-melodic contemporary styles of music, it can be counter productive. If you pay attention to how you feel while listening, you want to be hearing sounds that allow you to relax, both physically and mentally. I find I do better with CD's or other recordings that I have listened to many times so my mind can relax knowing the progression of the music.
Think of music as capable of having an impact like your trip to WalMart. You want to be aware of these kinds of stimulation.
Sounds like you are heading in the right direction.
My best to you.
