Spinal Accessory Nerve post massage - total loss of trapezius function
Very scary thing for me. Former collegiate swimmer, but still get in the pool 5 days a week. Was having my traps and neck worked on and the therapist got a bit deep. Never felt uncomfortable, actually felt great while on the table. Lot's of trigger point type sensations so figured all was good. She was in the posterior triangle/upper trap area. When I got up from the table I was astonished to feel a very heavy and 'long' feeling shoulder. Tons of droop and I had and still have zero ability to move in abduction. Flexion is marginal, but it's clear to see there is zero trapezius function.
I met with my PT and ortho and it's their assessment the accessory nerve was dinged/pinched. Now talking about nerve conduction study?
Has anyone had this injury and did you recover? I'm walking around with my hand in my pocket to support my shoulder b/c it's excruciating on my anterior shoulder/rotator muscles.
Lots of ice and NSAIDS. Sigh. Thanks...
