Hi Josh,

Sometimes the mouth will hurt quite a bit after a tooth extraction. There are several reasons why this happens but frequently it has to do with the the density of the bone. Some teeth are attached to the bone moreso than others which can make the procedure difficult. Every extraction requires a loosening of the tooth from the periodontal ligament that holds the tooth in the bone. Sometimes the ligament is diseased and the tooth has almost become one with the bone making it difficult to separate the two. Ultimately, the more inflammation there is, the more pain there will be.

If the pain does not subside by the third day, then it may be wise to see the oral surgeon for an evaluation.

Hope it feels a lot better by tommorrow!

lQUOTE=Josh.M;900878]Hello! i just had a quick question. This morning at 08:00 central time i had quite a bit of dental work done in preparation for boot camp. I had 4 fillings done and 2 teeth extracted ( #19 and #30 ) I'm also having a bridge put it but not until my mouth heals. My story is, I've had teeth extracted before, but #19 was a very difficult extraction. My dentist ended up using several different tools before having to "loosen or widen" the socket (if i heard him right) to get the tooth out. Around 12:00 when the numbness wore off i was in excruciating pain, so much so it left me debilitated. My dentist gave me a prescription for Lortab 7.5 - i have a high tolerance for pain and have never needed pain killers before, but today i took one and still the pain only subsided some. It is now around 1800 and i am fixing to take my second one for the day. My question is - is this type of pain normal on a difficult extraction? There is a very good size blood clot, and i have followed the doctors instructions to a T. The extraction on the other side has zero pain and i am just curious why the difference.

Thanks in advance!
