Default Arizona Governor’s Council on Spinal and Head Injuries

Arizona has a governor's advisory council that works to enhance the health, safety, and quality of life for children and adults with spinal cord and brain injuries and their families. The majority of the council members are physicians that treat spinal and head injuries, but they also have lay members, including those recovering from spine or head injuries.

I applied several weeks ago; today I received the official letter from Arizona Governor Jan Brewer appointing me to the Governor's Advisory Council on Spinal and Head Injuries. I am grateful to be able, in some small way, to pay forward some of the kindness and support I was shown after my accident.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.
