Cervical collar after surgery vs. none?
I am having a multi-level ACDF on September 5th (C 4-5, C 6-7). I was required to attend a spinal surgery class at the hospital where I will be having the surgery. The instructor mentioned that my neurosurgeon did not put his patients in a cervical collar after surgery. I was a little surprised by this and wanted to know if there are any pro's or con's regarding this issue. Personally, I think I would prefer some support of some kind. I have a tendency to over-do everything when I come home after surgery, and I've had quite a few surgeries in my life. Also, I have balance problems and I literally bounce off the walls at home sometimes, ha ha! I had a physical performed after the class by the doctor's PA. I asked her about this policy and she said I could have one if I felt I needed it. Would really like hearing from the group on this subject.
Thanks!
