And yet...and yet...
I will have to admit, if a young person came into my store/restaurant/whatever staggering and slurring his/her words...would I feel comfortable letting that person get into a car and drive away?
I believe it's illegal to ASK a person if she has a disability, but I guess you could always ask something like, "Are you feeling ill? Would you like to sit down?"
Once in a while I like to play the devil's advocate.
I had a customer who would come into the Post Office slowly and deliberately, obviously trying to maintain her balance. Sometimes she'd stumble or stagger a little. She spoke very slowly and deliberately, sometimes slurring her words or getting them mixed up. Guess what? She was drunk. Every day. For real. And no, she didn't smell like alcohol.
