I have a set of tiny gold ones....I used them on my broken toe years ago. The nickle ones if not covered in tape corrode with time. I have some old ones that look horrible now. It is from the acids in the skin, basically.

I think you will find the plastic covered ones very strong. On the foot they don't have to penetrate very far, anyway.
It takes a bit of experimenting to find you "sweet spot". Anatomy helps....
