SSI is for disabled people who haven't worked enough to qualify for SSDI. SSI pays a maxium of $698 a month, but SSDI is based on what you earned before you stopped working.
If you are not approved for SSDI, get a lawyer and appeal. You can get a lawyer who will work for a percentage of the lump sum (back-payments) you receive if you win the appeal.
