It sounds like you should follow the standard of allopathic medicine. If a drugs is tried and it helps, keep using it. If the side effects create a problem worse than the symptoms the med resolves, then other options should be considered.
In your case, if the drowsiness from the Benadryl is not a problem, then just be careful to follow long term use guidelines on the container. Benadryl can also help with insomnia. A call to your doctor's office may be worthwhile to confirm long term use guidelines.
I suggest you use the Benadryl as little as possible to avoid any negative impact it may have on your recovery.
