Default lipoic acid question

I have small fiber neuropathy and have recently purchased a bottle of alpha lipoic acid, Jarrow 300 mg Sustain. I'm hoping, if I'm lucky, this will help the condition. My questions are this:

1. It's my understanding that lipoic acid is absorbed better if it is taken on an empty stomach? Is this accurate?

2. The tablets are 300 mgs each. I intend to take 600 mg a day, but have started off at 300. After about a week and a half at 300, I plan on taking two a day to get to the 600. I'm guessing the two 300 mg tablets should be spaced apart, i.e., one morning/one evening. Or am I wrong and is it better to take both at the same time? Or does it even matter.

Thanks in advance for anyone's help!
