My heart goes out to you ! I sort of gasped when I read it (being the mother of a senior).

I know what you mean about responsibility but it's a fine line that we walk. I must say that it is a lot to expect someone to keep a year's worth of work together. It would be hard for an adult, too. It would make more sense to collect half way and then at the end.

This is a transition time, too. Many kids (and adults) have trouble with transitions.
