Have you heard back from your Dr regarding the genetic tests?
I don't know much about ataxia, but the symptoms you describe in your legs sound very familiar. I battled horrible unrelenting burning pain in both my legs for 6 yrs.....went to umpteen different types of specialists tring to get a solid diagnosis.
I'm not saying this is what you have by all means, but what you describe in your legs sounds like nerve pain (neuropathy), as tho your nerves have been mis-firing.
It might be worth it to check out the Peripheral Neuropathy forum.
In my case, I had other issues going on, such as my thyroid wasn't functioning right. I have HyPOthyroidism. Have you had your thyroid checked lately? I was very tired all the time. I am since on maintenance meds for that, but all these issues I had going on kind of all worked together to create the 'perfect storm' in my body.
Here's the PN forum:

My lower back pain from a slight scoliosis and arthritic deterioration also contributed to the neuropathy. The sympathetic nerve chain is responsible for the nerves that run along your lower extremities. I had a SNB (sympathetic nerve block) injection, which I responded very favorably to.
There are options out there to help control this type of pain.
Hopefully you will get some answers very soon. In alot of cases, it's a matter of process by elimination before diagnostic answers become evident.
Just throwin some ideas in there air....I certainly don't claim to know much

, but when I read what you described about your legs, it really caught my attention.
Caring,
Rae
