This may not be helpful at all but I knew someone who had muscle spasms while in bed. I know they weren't as violent as yours, but...
Anyways, after a visit to a doctor he was told his potassium was pretty low. On top of taking some sort of potassium supplement, he would eat a couple of bananas an hour or so before going to bed. It seemed to help him a great deal.
