First of all welcome, and thanks for joining us. While I sense your frustration and can empathize with not being where you were before the accident, as brain injuries go five months is not that long a time.

Glad you finally got into a rehab program. I don’t have experience where you are going but I’ve had rehab treatment with speech and occupational therapists. I feel that my recovery was a function of time and rehab treatments. Celebrate your progress and know that there will be ups and downs. I felt devastated after my initial neuro-psych evaluation showed significant cognitive deficits, as I thought that I was fine. I wasn’t. I kept at it, did what was prescribed, and three months later a follow up assessment showed a return to normal cognative functioning. Just keep in mind all brain injuries are different and they heal on their own schedule. Best to you as you recover.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.
