My injury was different (most head injuries are) but I'll share my experience and thoughts.

Mine was a temporal skull fracture, combined with an epidural hematoma; I had surgery primarily for the hematoma. I did have cognitive deficits but they have resolved.

When was your injury? I'm not a doctor but I suspect if you haven’t had any neurological problems as of yet, and they decided not to intervene surgically, your chances of not developing any complications are pretty good.

Regarding follow up, rest and good nutrition are important. Also have family members be aware of any behavioral or memory changes they may observe. If you (or they) do notice changes in mood or behavior you may want to see a neurologist or neuropsychologist.

Best to you.

What Happened: On November 29, 2010, I was walking across the street and was hit by a light rail commuter train. Result was a severe traumatic brain injury and multiple fractures (skull, pelvis, ribs). Total hospital stay was two months, one in ICU followed by an additional month in neuro-rehab. Upon hospital discharge, neurological testing revealed deficits in short term memory, executive functioning, and spatial recognition.

Today: Neuropsychological examination five months post-accident indicated a return to normal cognitive functioning, and I returned to work approximately 6 months after the accident. I am grateful to be alive and am looking forward to enjoying the rest of my life.
