I found the analogy a bit obtuse, but that's me. Here are some alternatives that may help some:
explaining chronic pain to others

I think also useful is understanding many doctors' reactions when dealing with chronic disease/pain patients (I've posted this before, but it's still the best I've seen -- alternatives welcome).
