ScaredGal,

It is typical for the dentin of the tooth to be a yellow, gray or brown color. When a tooth is prepped for a crown, the areas where the enamel is drilled away the dentin becomes visible. So that is most likely what you are seeing. Brown color on a tooth does not always indicate decay.
