Hey everyone. Glad to see this thread is still moving along. I havent checked in in a bit, but overall my neuropathy pain has continued to decrease which is great. Its not completely gone, but its manageable and I do get to be pretty active in some sports which is a gift.

The new battle is getting off gabapentin. I am down from 3600 to 700 mgs a day. I had an ok time going down to 1800 but since then tapering has been brutal - comes with withdrawal symptoms every day.

Anyone completely get off of this stuff, and what was the experience like?

Thumbs up

Hey Freeway, good to hear the neuropathy has improved. That's encouraging.

I was on Gab way back 10 years ago when the neurpathy just started. How I wish I had taken the neurologist's warning to quit drinking way back then but I was not ready. Gab did not help and made me loopy so I actually took myself off cold turkey. The doctor said I was lucky I didn't convulse. Who knew?

I am staying the course. I have a lot going on, all bad, but I can honestly say without drinking I am actually less depressed and much better energy, or perhaps that is nervous energy? I have an upcoming
operation and wanted to be in best possible health for that. As long as I was gonna be miserable without booze why not pile on nicotine withdrawal too. Wth.

I've posted this info in the past, but a friend who has dealt with neuropathy for probably 50 yrs or so got off "gab" years ago and went on Grape Seed Extract and she's been taking Grape Seed Ex for over 15 yrs...side effects from "gab" were nasty: nausea and dizziness two major ones. She just turned 92 and did many years of therapies for the miserable neuropathy mostly from skin cancers and radiation treatments and that major statin drug that's been prescribed to millions. The cholesterol fear obsession is very troubling, our bodies NEED cholesterol. ;

For me, it's been 3864 days sober BUT I still come here monthly because it's part of my sobriety plan. I want to hear from you, I want to know if we can be of any help at all.

You got this....

Doing good and behaving myself. Many years ago I quit for 13 years but then fell quite by accident after a spiked drink and thereafter fooled myself thinking I could drink like a normal person after so long of abstinence. Wrong! Took me ten years but hope I am back on track.
Ten years ago when the neurpathy first started I went to a neurologist. Even with downplaying my drinking, he had me pegged. He put me on Gab but it didn't help and since I wasn't going to quit drinking I saw no reason to continue.
Last week I had an operation. In recovery they gave me gab for pain and I noticed my neuropathy was greatly improved. I asked what the concentration was and was told 300mg but under normal circumstances the dosage would slowly be upped to that level. Likely years ago I was put on starter dose and thus no relief so......as soon as I am up and more mobile I will get to my primary care physician and get on Gab. Also I got my Amazon delivery of Nerve Support. It seems to have the basics for nerve health all in a capsule so hopefully saves my tummy and my pocketbook. That's the plan.
Hope you all are well.

Good luck SC! And, for what it's worth....welcome back!

I hope the "gab" works for you and you get some relief. My wife and I work out 3 times a week and this has helped my legs quite a bit. I can stand longer, they don't shake anymore and I almost did a jog the other day. Baby steps, right?

Icehouse, shakey legs? Oh yes. I have a very high pain threshold but what scares me most is the shakey weak legs. I know I have done much damage and muscular atrophy is apparent but I hope if I start walking I can regain some strength and thereafter get to the gym. Years ago I had excellent results with yoga for balance issues.

I have had a very tough life these last eleven years and while I must take responsibility for my health issues which were self imposed, the other cruelties were not my doing. As a result I have terrible anxiety and depression. Being off the booze has helped somewhat but if my mood does not continue to improve I may need a bit of medical intervention. I will also be interested in seeing my liver blood tests redone in a few months. Levels have been consistently rising so doc wanted an ultrasound. The results weren't pretty. Moderate fatty liver and doc warned I am heading for cirrhosis. Can you believe I still didn't quit? I guess you can.

Lastly, I broke a leg and Dr recommended a topical gel called Voltaren for pain and inflammation. He said use to be prescription but now over the counter.

Hey, I wasn't quite done. Anyway, I had heard these topicals are not very effective but I am getting some relief from the pain. I am using generic. The active ingredient is Diclofenac Sodium 1%. For those that suffer it might be worth a try. It's no miracle drug but def takes the edge off. I use at night when the pain is at it's worst and there is nothing to do but focus on it and cry about how I messed myself up.

Stay well and thanks for the welcome back. ♥️

Do the shakey leg <dancing in office>

Yep, it's weird. I'll be in the office, or talking to someone in a casual setting, or standing during the music at Church, and my legs will start to shake. It slowly gets worse until I start walking or sit down. But, this has completely stopped since I started working out. I hope it does not return.

I spend 10 minutes on an elliptical, 10 minutes on upper body then 10 more minutes on a leg press and a rowing machine. I could do more, but I am slowly building up weight and time. I dreaded it, but now I enjoy it

So, moral of the story, I think we can beat the shaky legs too....
