My son has the normal allergies like pollen ragweed and dust, he now takes singular for it and he used to take zyrtek, so far so good with the sigular. I used to take allergra, but found it didn't work as well as zyrtek did for my allergies. I haven't tried singular, but I am sure it's helping my son because he's not nearly as congested as he was before starting on singular recently.

Forgot to mention he has autism and seizure disorder along with his normal allergies.

my son has shown noticeable seasonal allergies for the first time this year with our drought here in Central Florida and lots of pollen everywhere

His doc has prescribed Flonase and zyrtec, but the insurance wont cover the z so Doc said to get Claritin.
However
my son is very reluctant to use them and is trying acupuncture and Bach's Flower remedy which seem to be helping some

I have dustmite allergy and some other sensitivities but so far my saline spray seems to work ok for me, along with Bach's Remedy

Zyrtec is what I take; my doctor had Rx'd Claritin in the past (a number of years ago) but it wasn't nearly as effective - for me -as the Zyrtec.

I hadn't heard of Singular, yet I will ask my doctor about it. If it won't conflict with my heart probs. or medication, I wouldn't mind trying it - to find out if it might work even better than the Zyrtec.

I understand totally about the drought, the rain helps clean the air and lower the pollen count, I definitely notice a difference when we don't have regular rain spells. I haven't tried claritin before but I can say that zrytec worked really well for both of us. I haven't heard of saline sprays before, did you just get like contact solution saline or regular saline and put it in a nasal spryer or did you buy it that way? Also is Bach's Remedy a natural approach you get at health food stores? Haven't heard of it before is why I ask.

I haven't tried Singular myself or I would be able to tell you if it worked better for me then zyrtec, I know that it is helping my son though, he finally is breathing better and doesn't sound congested all the time and isn't having nasal discharge like he was getting a few weeks ago.

the saline nasal spray comes ready prepared and available at all drugstores, health stores and even some supermarkets......or one can make it at home (i have a recipe somewhere from my dad, who always used it for his sinuses instead of prescription ones)

it really clears that dry stuffy nose feeling too

The Bach's Remedy is available at health stores....there are a range of them for different needs.

we always have Bach's Rescue Remedy, made from extracted flower essences
available....not only good with allergy etc but UNSURPASSED in its ability to bring instant calm to anyone having anxiety, panic, stress etc

That sounds like something that might be good to have on hand, I will have to check out the local health food store, thanks for the recommendation.

I'll also check into the saline spray my husband couuld use that instead of the other nasay spray that he uses and he would probably feel a lot better from it. Thanks again Chemar! I think this forum is a great addition to Neurtalk.

I carry a bottle of rescue remedy with me at all times. It's not so great with full blown panic attack but very useful for settling down my naturally high anxiety levels. What I call background noise.

This year seems to particularly bad for my allergies so far. I usually just suffer a little, nothing so bad that a surreptitious dabbing or even a quick wipe on the shirt sleeve () wouldn't cure.
I've never seen an allergist, but seem to be allergic to dust, pollen, and mold. This year it has been so bad I developed bronchitis from it, so I have been taking a store brand version of Benadryl at night. My Dr also gave me Flonase, which I didn't find particularly helpful. I don't like to take the allergy tablet during the day because it makes me drowsy.
I'm going to check into this forum frequently, and hope to glean a lot of useful info from all of you experts, so keep posting, and thanks, DocJohn, for the forum!

I tried Flonase once, too, and it also didn't do anything.

My allergies are alfalfa and grass (lawn); it's particularly bad when lawns are mowed. If I could just convince everyone to mow their lawns on the same day of the week at the same time every week, I think I'd feel a whole lot better. Not much chance in that happening, though, huh .

Bobbi, my Dad was allergic to cut grass, along with about a hundred other things. Weird things, like elephants! I'm just grateful I don't have anywhere near the problems he did.
Hope you don't have to cut your own grass! Talk about adding insult to injury!
