Confused Leaky gut syndrome

Does anyone have an experience or information on leaky gut syndrome. I have developed new food intolerances and have chronic pain. I have changed my diet and feel better. I have an appointment with a nutritionist. I have blood work scheduled with an integrated medicine physician. I spoke to the nutritionist at the office and she said it sounded like I have leaky gut syndrome. I looked it up and I have many of the symptoms. Trying to find answers.

Tread cautiously.

Leaky gut syndrome

I haven't seen any credible studies related to Leaky Gut Syndrome—not one. ("Leaky gut" is not the same as "leaky gut syndrome")

Note: Some medical scientists use the term "leaky gut" for problems associated with abnormal intestinal permeabilty, but "leaky gut syndrome" is not one of them.

I'm not saying there's nothing to it; I'm saying that IMO there isn't enough good information about it to back up/support any claims/statements, so watch what's behind your gut.

That said, I have IBS, have been mis-diagnosed as having Crohn's Disease, and been through the gauntlet/mill regarding LGS.

Have you researched ALCAT food testing. I did the test as it was ordered by my Neuro surgeon. I found the results amazing. I have food intolerances that I would have never figured out. Will see a doctor next week to see what she says about all this. One doctor told me by taking away the offending food for 6 months, my gut should clear up. I accidentally ate something and had horrible upper stomach pain. It was like I had a hard knott. I also had upper respiratory issues.

ALCAT food testing is one of those areas where I would tread cautiously. Did your neurosurgeon actually order ALCAT testing or just mention/suggest it? I ask because it seems odd that a neurosurgeon would order such a test, and then you would see another doctor for evaluation of it.
Quote:
The [ALCAT] test is not supported by research and is not considered to be a reliable medical diagnostic tool; since it has not been appropriately validated it is not a suitable guide for therapeutic decisions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ALCAT
Quote:
"[The] results have been shown to not be reproducible, give different results when duplicate samples are analysed blindly, don't correlate with those from conventional testing, and 'diagnose' food hypersensitivity in subjects with conditions where food allergy is not considered to play a pathogenic role."

The Specific Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) does something similar (though perhaps more radical) by eliminating most all foods for a time, and reintroducing them slowly, one at a time. I followed the SCD religiously when I had a major IBS flare (the one misdiagnosed as Crohn's Disease) and my life-threatening symptoms were reduced by 50% within a month, 75% within 6 months, and 100% a year later. I credit the diet with saving 1/2 my bowel, however it has come under criticism as well.
Quote:
The diet is claimed to treat inflammatory bowel disease and various other gastrointestinal and systemic diseases. However, scientific evidence of the diet's effectiveness is lacking, and the diet may pose a health risk due to reduced nutritional quality.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Specific_Carbohydrate_Diet
Quote:
According to WebMD the diet has not been proved by scientific evidence, may pose a health risk because of its low nutritional quality, and should not be adopted without first consulting a physician.[2] The Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America say that "there is no evidence to suggest that any particular food or diet causes, prevents or cures inflammatory bowel disease" and that there have been only limited studies of the SCD in relation to Crohn's Disease and ulcerative colitis.
Ibid.

Doc
My neurosurgeon did order the test. His PA went over it with me since he was out of the country when my results came back. He is in LA. I live in Florida. I am seeing the Intergerated Physician here in Florida. She ordered some genetic testing and also has a nutritionist in the office. Since removing the offenders from my diet in December my pain has significantly decreased. I just want someone who will put all the information together for me. My doctors here have all been impressed that a neurosurgeon looked outside the box.
The nutritionist mentioned Leaky Gut Syndrome because all the food and chemical intolerances that I have developed. I see the doctor tomorrow and see what she thinks is going on. I do find it interesting how food can have a negative impact on your health.

Everything we ingest, inhale, inject, absorb, and/or are otherwise exposed to and/or experience—or not—can and does have some impact on our health.

Default Gaps

I'm breastfeeding my son who has developed many, many food allergies through my milk. We both have leaky guts, and we are implementing GAPS.
