First, the olive oil is for soap! I hope you won't be ingesting any of it in soap form. There are pure, 100% olive oils with no additives available and might just be your ticket to survival. Heck, before you work too hard, you might just test a small sample of the pure variety on your skin and see if there is a reaction.

In the states, our ground water has varying degrees of mineral content, chiefly iron, which tastes foul and puts an orange cast on laundered clothing and plumbing fixtures. We call that water "hard" and to "soften" it, we have large tanks in the home that filter the water through pellet salt thus removing the prominent minerals and their more pungent properties. Users of private wells are generally in more rural areas and typically prefer "soft" water. Users of the municipal "city" water systems have filtered water directly piped into their homes, eliminating the need for a water softener. So ends your first lesson in USA 101. There will be a pop quiz.

Greetings again, Marci! I'm very intrigued by your situation and have continued to dabble in investigating alternatives to ordinary cleaning/hygiene products.

Today, I googled the phrase, "cleaning hair without shampoo" and was astonished by what I learned. You might try it and take a look at the varying testimonials, it was actually encouraging for the most part!

Baking soda may also prove to be a viable alternative to soap. I've looked around a bit and found that it is a very good skin cleanser and deodorant just as it is, mixed with water to form a loose paste. To make deodorant, mix a batch of baking soda and corn starch (only as a bonding agent) and pour it into a mold. Simply dampen that block before applying it to underarms. Avoid applying it directly after shaving.

I got in contact with an olive farm who produces their own oil. They told me that they pressed the pip as well as the fruit. When I asked if it had the same chemicals as apricot kernels (which I am unable to use) they told me they didn't know. End of line.

Actively seeking a supplier of pure Castile Olive soap to try but they all want to sell me blended soap. Ongoing.

Thank you for lesson on water. Are we Aussies spoilt here!

I tried baking powder as a kid but with the Aussie summers not a great idea. No one appreciates bad body odour, especially me and you can't escape yourself.

Corn starch is used here for diaper or nappy rash so that gave me the giggles imagining myself putting it under my arms albeit mixed with baking soda. I will experiment with that one.

Now, I am off to google washing hair. I lead such an exciting life.

Hi Marcy, not sure where you live. I used to be allergic to all toiletries. I was down to using olive oil for hair conditioner. I can now use anything (except products with real plant materials in them. My chemical allergies are gone but still working on the plant allergies). The treatment that I got was LDA (low dose allergen) therapy. This is what is offered in the USA. In Britain they have EPD (Enzyme Potentiated Desensitization). It worked for my daughter too. She was allergic to almost all food and now she is eating everything. It has really changed our lives.

Hi Sannah, No doctor has suggested anything like that to me. I am just told don't eat that and don't use this. Hi Marci, yes, this therapy is basically unknown which is really a shame. We received it from a doctor who practices alternative medicine. A few allergy clinics offer it and ENT docs. About 50 docs in 20 states offer it.

The least you could do is ask permission, I reckon. But.. what is done is done and the good thing is that there is no-one after my blood because you would be able to track someone down very easily. Spooky really.

I am so excited to learn that the new hair regime is working for you! I'm also amazed by this. But honestly, when you think about it, shampoos have really only been around a pretty short time in the grander scheme of things, how did the world survive before they appeared?

Also, I have been remiss in my duties! It occurred to me that I have not shared a great deodorant with you. I use the Crystal Stick, one lasts forever, or close to it. Mine is 4 years old and not even half gone. It has no aluminum or antiperspirant properties added to it. I learned that the body's natural defenses require us to perspire to stay clean! This item is based only on mineral salts, so it may be worth looking into for yourself. I am very satisfied with it.

In my quest to fix you,

I've also discovered that the only way to make any oil saponify into soap is by using lye. Is LYE the big culprit in all this??????

I'll share this other tidbit with you, because of my weak hands (from MS) I keep a cheap hairbrush in the shower to massage-scrub my scalp. It works very well for me.
