FALCONER — He’s unable to move a muscle. Yet, Keven Hulings moves mountains when it comes to helping others.

A victim of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, Hulings on Saturday received the Western New York Robert Ross Muscular Dystrophy Association’s Personal Achievement Award.

The award, presented at the 10th annual Friends of Hugo Appreciation Dinner, was given in recognition of Hulings’ community efforts to help others with ALS as well as other neuro-muscular diseases, and for raising community awareness of ALS, according to Terrance Roberts, Western New York MDA Chapter district director.

Hulings, 51, was stricken with ALS 16 years ago. The former Cummins Inc. employee walked for the last time in 1992, and his arms gave out two years later. Yet, he refused to remain hospitalized and, in 1997, with the help of friends and supporters, Hulings established the Hugo Fund, and the Friends of Hugo, a fundraising organization, operated entirely by volunteers.

In addition, the group has maintained a Hugo Loan Closet. The closet, housed in space donated by Falconer’s J.P. Diamond Co., is a repository where wheelchairs, beds, scooters and numerous other items are loaned, making it possible for many who are physically challenged to remain in their own homes, rather than in nursing homes or hospitals.

Hugo fundraising efforts have been very successful, with more than $50,000 raised from golf tournaments. In addition, the Friends of Hugo, offer scholarships each year to two high school seniors who wish to pursue professions related to helping the physically disabled.

Scholarships are offered to students who attend Falconer, Southwestern, Maple Grove, Jamestown and Frewsburg schools. Over the past nine years, 19 scholarships have been awarded, said Robert Terreberry, Hugo scholarship chairman.

Through use of a machine called a DynaVox, Hulings expressed his appreciation for the award. Tracing the history of the Hugo Fund and Friends of Hugo, Hulings said the name Hugo, was a childhood nickname, a name that reminded him of ‘‘happy days when I was a kid.’’

‘‘I thank God, for a second chance to live, to help others,’’ Hulings said. ‘‘There are angels above us, and angels here on earth. And, there are many here with me tonight — all Friends of Hugo. Thank you for making this all reality.’’
