There is great deal of evidence suggesting the real problem in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is in the glial cells. Possibly the most importart are the astrocytes; they form the blood brain barrier. The among of study of astrocytes pales in comparison to neurons themselves but without glia, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes and schwann cells, neurons would have inadequate support to function.
