Fighting ALS
New York Teacher - December 3, 2007

For several years, union members from Long Island and the New York City metropolitan area have hit the links on Columbus Day for a good cause. The annual Long Island Educators & Health Care Professionals Cup benefits a scholarship program for high school seniors and the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Clinic at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, has no known cure. It claims 6,000 lives in the U.S. every year.

NYSUT and more than 50 of its local unions from across Long Island sponsor the fundraiser, which is also affiliated with "Ride for Life," a charity founded by Long Island educator Christopher Pendergast, seated at left, flanked by friends and NYSUT members including from left, NYSUT President **** Iannuzzi; Rob Molinaro, Central Islip TA president; NYSUT staffer Richie Baron; Vern Lambert, a Middle Country TA retiree; Barbara Barosa, Riverhead TA president; and Mel Stern, a NYSUT Board member and Half Hollow Hills TA president.
