Bob Labbance Fundraiser Set

In an unprecedented collaboration, golf course architecture-related groups and societies have banded together to support a fund raising event for New England writer Bob Labbance on June 23. The Vermont-based architecture and maintenance historian with over a dozen books to his credit is suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).
The fundraising event will benefit him and his family. The event includes golf at Ekwanok Golf Club, Manchester, Vt., one of the country's historic courses, with a live auction to follow. Live music will be provided by Lloyd Cole.
Registration is at 9:30 a.m. with an 11 a.m. shotgun start. Brunch and supper are included in the $500 per person entry fee.
The event is co-sponsored by GCSAA, the American Society of Golf Course Architects, Golf Digest course raters, Golfweek's Best course raters, the Seth Raynor Society, the Donald Ross Society, the Wayne Stiles Society, the A.W. Tillinghast Society and the Walter Travis Society.
Auction items include rounds at Boston Golf Club (with architect Gil Hanse), Erin Hills GC, Fox Chapel GC, Kingsley Club (with architect Mike DeVries), Long Shadow GC (with architect Mike Young), Mountain Lake GC, Norwood Hills CC, Pacific Dunes (with architect Tom Doak), Renaissance GC (with architect Brian Silva), Sanctuary GC (with architect Jim Engh), Secession GC, Southern Hills Plantation, Sugarloaf Mountain Town & GC, Tobacco Road and Wintonbury Hills GC.
Co-chairs for the event are: Brad Klein, Golfweek; Tony Pioppi, golf writer; Nancy Powers, Southworth Development; and Chad Ritterbusch of the ASGCA.

Silent auction to benefit Larry Schott
04/03/2008

MOUNT CARMEL — A silent auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mount Carmel Area Elementary School cafeteria to benefit Lawrence W. “Larry” Schott, who is battling Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

There will be baskets of varying themes, including men’s, women’s, NFL, springtime, movie night, family night and more; and gift certificates for local restaurants, gas stations and attractions. Also, food will be sold.

Bidding will end at approximately 3 p.m., after which the winners will be announced.

Schott has been ill for about three years.

He was diagnosed approximately two years ago with Lou Gehrig’s Disease, or ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis).

A progressive weakness develops in ALS patients due to selective death of motor neurons, the nerve cells that carry messages telling the muscles to contract, according to the ALS Association Web site at alsa.org.

Schott, a 1985 graduate of Mount Carmel Area School District, earned teaching and administration degrees at Bucknell University and entered the education field.

After acquiring the disease, he had been forced to retire from teaching at Pleasant Valley School at age 37, after which he returned to Mount Carmel to live with his parents.

Those interested in donating but can’t make it to the auction can send contributions to a trust fund set up at Union Bank to the following address: The Lawrence W. Schott Trust Fund, c/o Union National Bank, 1 N. Oak St., P.O. Box 3676, Mount Carmel 17851-0367.
