Post ALS chapter honor

ALS chapter honor
Monday, April 14, 2008

The South Carolina Chapter of the ALS Association has selected retired Air Force Brig. Gen. Thomas R. Mikolajcik and his family as the individuals who best exemplify the spirit of ALS Across America for the chapter during ALS Awareness Month in May.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive, neurodegenerative muscular disease that usually has a survival rate of two to five years from the time of diagnosis. Mikolajcik, 61, has lived with ALS since 2003.

Along with wife and caregiver Carmen and daughter Christina Mikolajcik Robertson, Mikolajcik played a key role in establishing the chapter, as well as the first ALS clinic in the Palmetto State at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Mikolajcik, who lives in Mount Pleasant, served for more than 27 years as an Air Force pilot and squadron and wing commander.

The ALS Across America national campaign recognizes courageous individuals with ALS and their caregivers who are role models for people with Lou Gehrig's disease.
