ALS clinic dedicated in Round Rock
By David C. Doolittle | Tuesday, July 8, 2008, 02:53 PM

The Muscular Dystrophy Association and St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center today opened the first clinic in Central Texas specifically for people who have been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The clinic, in St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center at 2300 Round Rock Ave., will focus on comprehensive treatment of the fatal neuromuscular disease, including physician’s visits, occupational, physical and speech therapy and respiratory services. Patients will also be able to see a dietician and will be able to use diagnostic equipment from St. David’s hospital at the center.

The clinic will welcome its first patients Thursday and will serve people from about 9 a.m. to noon the second Thursday of each month.

The Round Rock clinic is one of 226 MDA multidisciplinary facilities in the country and one of four in Texas. The others are located in Houston, San Antonio and Dallas.

“For ALS patients, it can be hard to travel to San Antonio,” said Dr. Adam Horvit, the clinic’s director. “This clinic will be able to provide services for people locally.”

The clinic will be funded by donations to the MDA, said Dana Keesey, the director of community wellness and rehabilitation services at St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center.
