Thumbs up Art for ALS Research

Art for ALS Research
Email|Print|Single Page| Text size – + By Wendy Killeen
July 31, 2008
A group of children whose families have been affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, recently created art to be auctioned to support research into the disease.

During a one-day workshop led by artist Lainey Hunter, the youngsters transformed old window sashes into original art using reverse painting on glass. Hunter then added finishing touches and background colors to enhance the paintings.

The workshop was sponsored by the Angel Fund, a Wakefield nonprofit that raises money for ALS research at the Cecil B. Day Laboratory for Neuromuscular Research at Massachusetts General Hospital.

The art is being auctioned at the Angel Fund Gala tonight at Fenway Park. The art also was digitally photographed and images will be featured in books, and on apparel and other items, to help the Angel Fund raise money throughout the year.

Red Sox pitcher Mike Timlin was at the workshop, with his kids Jake and MyKayla, and created his own painting to be auctioned. Other participants, ranging in age from 5 to 13, were Samantha Sanders of Saugus; Annie and Tom Statham of Milton; Carolyn Nigro and Caroline O'Neill of Reading; Jeannine Crateau and Claire Daly of Danvers; and Christian Kennedy of Cohasset.
