Make a Joyful Noise golf outing set for Sept. 7

When Tiffany Macias was diagnosed with ALS, better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, she took it upon herself to make a difference.
She made that difference by founding Make a Joyful Noise, an organization whose purpose is to raise awareness for ALS - a disease that robs individuals of their ability to speak and move, and often leads to death in as little as 2-5 years.

After a successful golf outing fundraiser in Lansing in June, Macias, who grew up in St. Clair Shores, decided to have a golf outing fundraiser in Macomb County, where many members of her family still reside.

Her grandfather, Gerald Oehmke of Clinton Township, taught drivers education to Romeo Community Schools students for more than 31 years. He is also a member of the Clinton Township Historical Society. Her uncle and aunt, Pat and Jackie Cooley, and their son Sean, also live in Romeo.

With the encouragement and support of her family, Macias has returned to the area to host MJN’s second 4-person charity golf scramble, which takes place at Pine Valley Golf Club, 16801 31 Mile Road, on Sunday, Sept. 7.

With a 2 p.m. shotgun start, the event costs $85 per golfer, which includes lunch and dinner. Many prizes will be awarded, including cash prizes for the three top teams. A “White Hot Putter” will be raffled off, and each golfer has chances to win the hole-in-one prize of $10,000 toward a new vehicle from Heidebreicht Chevrolet.

All of MJN’s events are meant to create awareness for ALS. Macias believes the more people are educated about ALS, the more people will come out to support people like her who have been diagnosed with ALS.

Macias and her husband Tony Macias have three children - Mackenzie, 10, Silas, 5, and Avery, 3. Find out more about her, her family and her cause at www.joyfulnoisecharity.org
