Laugh Kids' carnival to help people with Lou Gehrig's disease

Kids' carnival to help people with Lou Gehrig's disease
By carnivalforpals • Reader Submitted • September 18, 2008

The public is invited to the Carnival for Pals on Sunday, September 28th, 12-4pm rain or shine at the Driftwood Cabana Club, Sea Bright.

Carnival for Pals once again has assembled a talented and energetic group of kids to plan, promote and run this extraordinary event aimed at helping people afflicted with the fatal and devastating disease ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Local schools, Girl Scout Troops, Teams and local kids have planned an amazing, over-the-top Carnival.

The children who are involved are the “Captains” of the event and work for months securing prizes, auction items, building games, making crafts and decorations, and dreaming up only what a child's mind can imagine. The kids enrolled in Stacy Smith's music classes have been practicing like rock stars preparing for their big gig and Ralph Columbino's acting classes will provide an amazing talent show. and MJM Dancer's will get the crowd going with their dance moves.

Aside from the usual Carnival fare, The BBQ row at the Driftwood Cabana Club on Sea Bright will feature top celebrity chef's like Copper Canyon, Ross's Dockside and Mcloone's grilling special treats and guest bartenders will offer a last taste of summer at the tiki bar.

Stillwell-Hansen has offered to sponsor all the rides and games and many local businesses have stepped up to help ensure an incredible event.

The event was inspired by a local Rumson Mom of 4 who has ALS and along with her children came up with an exciting way to raise funds to help find a cure. By “selling” LEGO bricks, they will assemble a mini-version of Yankee Stadium in honor of Lou Gehrig at the Carnival and auction it off to the highest bidder. Proceeds from the LEGO's will benefit ALS-TDI, the world's largest lab dedicated solely to finding treatments and a cure for ALS.

The Carnival for Pals will benefit the Joan Dancy & PALS (People with ALS) Support Group which helps more than 65 people in Monmouth & Ocean County who have this fatal and terrible disease. They offer financial help, nursing care, medical equipment as well as hold 2 monthly support groups. For more information on this organization which was started by Terry Magovern after his girlfriend Joan succumbed to ALS, visit www.joandancyandpals.org
