Cutting edge research on MND
[Posted: Mon 13/10/2008 by Niall Hunter, Editor] A new research foundation for motor neurone disease was formally launched with a special clinical meeting in Dublin at the weekend. The aim of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDRF) is to promote research and develop new ways of helping those with this devastating condition. The weekend meeting at Beaumont Hospital showcased the national motor neurone disease clinic and research programme at the hospital. According to the Association, international cutting edge research into MND is currently underway in Ireland. These include exciting new findings from a genome wide association study in MND patients, and he first ever population-based study of cognition in MND. In 2006, Irish researchers led by Prof Orla Hardiman of Beaumont Hospital found a unique new 'Celtic' gene for MND. Researchers believe that this Irish gene could help to unlock the enigma of MND and progress the search for new treatments.
