Dental hygiene class raises $2,216 to help ALS patients
By Staff Published: November 5, 2008 Students from Danville Community College’s dental hygiene class of 2009 held a fundraiser Sunday for two local people with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Lindsay McCall, class treasurer, said the students raised $2,216 as part of their ALS Benefit Walk to help cover medical expenses for Dana Dixon and John Christopher. The money will be divided equally between the two men. Dixon, who handled media relations for United Steelworkers Local 831 for several years, drove his wheelchair a mile to take part in the benefit. Local 831 members also held a 50-50 drawing and gave his family $476, McCall said. She said class members wanted to do something for Christopher and Dixon once they heard about their situation. McCall said students were thankful for the support they received from local businesses and groups, including Food Lion, Van’s Med-Tec, Wal-Mart, Crane Tire, Paradise Lake and Campground, the United Steelworkers Union, Women of Steel and others. Donations can be made to the fund set up for Dixon and Christopher until Nov. 15. Mail checks to DCC Hygiene Class of 2009, 2029 Keeling Drive, Keeling, VA 24566. http://www.godanriver.com/gdr/news/l...patients/7276/
