OMAHA —
We know that New York Yankee Joba Chamberlain can pitch.

But what about his smooth talk?

Nebraskans will find out at the third annual ALS in the Heartland's bachelor-bachelorette charity auction.

The former Nebraska star will participate in the Jan. 23 auction to help raise awareness of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease. There is no cure for the disease, which affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, but medication can slow its progress.

Chamberlain, 23, will not attend the event. Instead, he'll be featured in a video.

Steve Langan, executive director of ALS in the Heartland, said all money raised at the auction will remain in Nebraska and western Iowa to help those suffering from ALS, their families and caregivers.

ALS in the Heartland also has raised money through walks and poker runs, but the auction is its most profitable event. Last year, the auction raised $104,000.

Each Nebraska celebrity comes with an entertainment package. It could be a Motley Crue concert or dinner at the mayor's house. A restaurant may donate a meal.

Depending on what's offered, bidding could start at $150 or more. The highest bidder gets the night out with the celebrity.

Some of the past bachelors and bachelorettes include attorney and Congressional candidate Jim Esch, former Miss Nebraska USA and Dallas Cowboys cheerleader Micaela Johnson and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Rodgers.

Chamberlain's night of entertainment is a "unique Yankees experience," that will include a trip to a game in New York with field-side seats and a meet-and-greet with the former Husker.

"He's a hero to Nebraskans," Langan said. "He's a hard worker and a dedicated person and we're truly grateful that he's embraced our cause."

The ALS in the Heartland charity auction will be at the Embassy Suites in La Vista. Tickets are $100 each or $175 for a couple. A table of eight costs $800. For tickets or more information about the auction, visit www.alsintheheartland.org.
