RSVP: Media reception attendees please call ALS Society of Alberta (contact info below) by Tuesday, Sept. 12 at 5 p.m. >> BACKGROUND: Enmax presents Elizabeth's Concert of Hope, Sunday, Sept. 17 at the Jack Singer Concert Hall in Calgary, an evening of music and entertainment in support of the ALS Society of Alberta. The Calgary event is part of a nation-wide benefit tour founded by namesake Elizabeth Grandbois, a former Calgary nurse, now in Hamilton, Ontario, who is currently living with ALS, a degenerative neuromuscular disease (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Vowing to dedicate her remaining time to raising awareness and funds to support those living with ALS and to find a cure, Grandbois created Elizabeth's Concert of Hope. This year (2006) is the first year the concert will be staged across Canada. The Calgary concert lineup features country king George Fox; East Coast trio Shaye, a collaboration of Kim Stockwood, Damhnait Doyle and Tara MacLean; the Lunch At Allen's group, another collaboration featuring roots artists Murray McLauchlan, Ian Thomas, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church; and Alfie Zappacosta, a mainstay of the Canadian smooth rock scene. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and will be emceed by zany Calgary comic Tony Binns and esteemed Canadian actress Wendy Crewson, who has pledged her support to the cause on account of her experiences portraying Sue Rodriguez, a person who lived with ALS, in the 1998 film At The End of the Day: The Sue Rodriguez Story. Also in attendance will be Elizabeth Grandbois herself, who will overcome the limited mobility she is experiencing as a result of her condition to appear at every Canadian concert to offer inspiration and moral support. Tickets are $95, available at all TicketMaster outlets, as well as through the ALS Society of Alberta. Doors open at 6 p.m. for the high-energy Pop To Stop ALS balloon burst, a unique fundraiser featuring prizes in several price categories corresponding to numbers contained within balloons. Once the balloon is "popped" the purchaser claims a prize of greater value than the amount paid. Special guest hosts for Pop To Stop include Calgary Firefighters and members of the Calgary Stampeder Outriders cheerleading squad.
