Former Syracuse Goalie Travis Solomon Battling ALS
Travis Solomon, goalie for the 1983 NCAA national champion Syracuse University men's lacrosse team, is battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease). Solomon was a first-team All-American during the second of two seasons at Cobleskill Junior College, where he helped lead the team to the Juco finals in 1980. After graduating from Cobleskill, Solomon was headed to North Carolina State, when that program was discontinued by the university. Travis ended up at Syracuse and played under legendary coach Roy Simmons, Jr. Syracuse sported a 14-1 record in 1983, and they forged a come-from-behind 17-16 victory over Johns Hopkins in the title game. Travis was named an Honorable Mention All-American that year. After college, he played for the Iroquois National team, including as recently as 2006, when he was 46 years old. There is a web site to help Travis and his family fight the disease: www.travissolomon.org. You can also find a great deal of interesting information about his lacrosse career at the SUNY Cobleskill web site, which has a page for a fund-raising event that will take place on February 28. http://www.laxpower.com/laxnews/news.php?story=12159
