Post Letter to the Editor: Somebody please explain

Somebody please explain
Letter to the Editor:

From Ken Stepan, Sauk Centre

In light of the recent anniversary of Roe v. Wade and the inauguration of our new President, I would really appreciate if somebody could please explain two very troubling contradictions.

When a pregnant woman is killed in a state where abortion on demand is legal, how is it possible to accuse the defendant with a double homicide? Doesn't legalizing abortion automatically define ALL unborn children as something other than human beings? Why are they magically transformed into a human being simply because the mother was killed before she had the opportunity to exercise her "rights" and abort her unborn child? Am I wrong, or isn't this a perfect definition of "contradiction in terms"?

Secondly, why is the entire population of this country so appalled whenever the media blares out a headline along the lines of "Newborn Found In Dumpster" or "Newborn Abandoned On Roadside"? Why is this woman considered a horrible monster who should be sent to prison for life when, just one day earlier she could have had an abortion and only a select few would ever know about it. Again, am I an idiot, or is this extremely contradictory?

And while I'm ranting on the subject and because there was a headline concerning this in the paper recently, shame on the AMA for promoting and shouting from the rooftops, the benefits of embryonic stem cell research. Who gave them the right to decide whose life is more valuable, that of the patient or the unborn child? And if you're thinking "He wouldn't be saying this if he had a loved one affected by a debilitating disease!" Here is a news flash for you, I'm dying of Lou Gehrig's Disease and I would never presume that my life is any more important than anyone elses.

I remain a very conservative Ken Stepan, and I wholeheartedly approve this message.
