Trophy Charleston AFB to build new child care center

Charleston AFB to build new child care center
The Associated Press

CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Charleston Air Force Base is breaking ground on a new child development center that will care for more than 300 children.

The new center replaces a 38-year-old building on the installation. Ceremonies are scheduled for Friday.

The center has been named for a former commander of the 437th Air Wing at the base, Brig. Gen. Tom Mikolajcik (mik-oh-LY'-chek).

Air Force officials say the retired commander was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease, in 2003.
The air wing's current commander, Col. John Millander, says Mikolajcik was being honored because of his years of work that improved the lives of both military and civilian employees on the air base.
