Ribbon Scientists discuss research on Lou Gehrig's disease

Scientists discuss research on Lou Gehrig's disease

Sunday, March 8, 2009 3:46 AM EDT
By JERRY WOLFFE
Of The Oakland Press

About 60 top scientists met at a Birmingham Hotel to discuss research being done to find a treatment for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

Jim Hiller of Hiller’s Markets, based in Southfield, whose mother died of the disease, donated $1 million to create an ALS research clinic in 2007.

Harriet Hiller died Oct. 10, 2000, at age 76 of ALS, he said.

“I gave money to these researchers so nobody’s mother, father, relative or friend would die from ALS,” said Hiller of Franklin.

“If scientists find a treatment or cure for ALS, we’re going to understand all the other neuron or central nervous system diseases.”
