Dr. Kurt E. Marquart, an associate professor at Concordia Theological Seminary, died early this morning of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s Disease, at 72.

“Dr. Marquart was a distinguished colleague, beloved professor, and brother in Christ,” said Dr. Dean O. Wenthe, the seminary’s resident.

Wenthe said Marquart died peacefully at home, adding that one of the last things he did was baptize his new great-grandson, Evan.

Marquart was born in Tallinn, Estonia, on June 20, 1934. He had been a member of the seminary’s faculty since 1975 and served on a number of boards and committees throughout The Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod.

Before coming to the seminary he served parishes in Queensland, Australia, and Weatherford, Texas. He was a 1959 graduate of Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, Mo., and had been awarded a Doctor of Divinity degree (Honoris Causa) from Concordia University–Wisconsin, Mequon, in 2001.

Marquart is survived by his wife Barbara; children Danny, Cynthia, Barry, Angela and Anthony; 18 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Friday at Kramer Chapel on the seminary’s campus, 6600 N. Clinton St. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in Luther Hall at the seminary.
