Default I'm in a bad place

I've been having muscle spasms and cramps in both calves for the past month, I can't feel the spasms when I walk or when I flex my calf, however my legs feel tight while I walk! My thumb also closes into the palm of my hand on its own, I'm also getting spasms in different parts of my body!

The first gp I went to said it was probably viral since all my blood work came back fine! I went to another gp and expressed my concern that something is wrong, I think I have als, so he has set me up with an emg in one month!

I am in a bad place at the moment, I am absolutely terrified, I'm on anxiety medication, I really believe that I have als! It won't leave my mind, I've lost 14lbs in the last week and a half, I can't sleep, and when I do I have awful nightmares, I cry in the bath, this fear is awful, I've missed work, and I'm the only one who works in the household, I have a wife and a 20 month old girl!

I'm sorry for venting like this, there are a lot of brave people on here who have to read fearful posts from people who haven't being diagnosed, I just don't know where to turn, I don't want to upset my wife!

Hi James,

This is going to sound obvious, but you have to try to relax. First, do not take Anxiety meds before bed, many can cause bad dreams/nightmares. Simple breathing techniques and Meditation are going to help you a lot more now. You can find examples everywhere, or I will pop up a Link to my Buddhist Tutor's Meditation site in a moment.

While you clearly have something wrong with you, for your family's sake it is time to be rational and listen to your Doctor. Do not fear the worst, look forward to the best Life has to offer you with your wife and child.

Believe me, I know Anxiety brings out the irrational in us, but our fear cannot kill us and we should not let it rule our lives.

Be strong.

Dave.

Here is the Page for Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's Simple Breathing Meditation instructions:

http://www.how-to-meditate.org/breat...ditations.htm/

While it is a Buddhist technique, it is aimed at, and for, everyone to benefit. It is a very powerful technique to have in your mental health armoury and it is easy to master.

Thanks for the reply Dave, this fear is taking over my life! Since my little girl was born I've become extremely fearful, fear for her safety and fear I won't be there for her!

I know nothing about what brings on ALS, but do you get enough magnesium and potassium? That's the first thing I thought of when you say cramps in calfs. How long has this been going on? Living in fear isn't helping you overall.

A good article explaining it.

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/Disorders/a...detail_ALS.htm

Perhaps James has seen it.

James,

Having a little girl has brought out the underlying fears felt by all fathers. It will get worse as she gets older and boys are involved

What you have is an extreme Anxiety due to the overabundance of Love. It IS controllable, but you need to open up your thoughts and fears to a Therapist and talk them through. It will not be easy, and your 'Trigger' is just as valid as mine of people, phones, eating, Therapists… But you go in armed with one 'Trigger' identified, there may be more you are suppressing.

Have your tests, have your bloods done and all your levels checked for an obvious cause of the cramping as Caroline suggests, but expect to be around for a long time for your wife and daughter.

Dave.
