Bikers ride for ALS benefit

A motorcycle fun run brought two unique groups together for a good cause.

The first annual Max's Ride kicked off Saturday in honor of Max Harrison, a Gulf War veteran who died at the age of 36 from Lou Gehrig's disease.

ALS is a neuro degenerative disease where the brain stops sending signals to voluntary muscles in the body.

The event began with a salute to military, past and present. Max's Ride then continued with a motorcycle trip through Austin. Bikers from across the city came out to show support for ALS research.

"It's important for me to be here to support all the local riders and do everything I can for the community help medical steps take their process and do well for other people," Jackie Colwell of Ladies on Wheels said.

Proceeds from the event will benefit the ALS South Texas chapter, which provides ALS patients with services. The chapter also conducts research.
