Hello Everyone - I'm so glad to have found this community because I have no one else to talk to about my mom's situation. Mom had an aneurysm in her right frontal lobe on 5/16. Her aneurysm was coiled that same day. We have been told that she had a couple of very small strokes over the next several days. She was transferred out of ICU 2 days ago. At this point, she does not speak and she has a lot of weakness / little movement on her left side. I've been told repeatedly by the nurses and the doctors that this is going to be a very long recovery process, but its still hard to see such little progress day by day. It has now been 16 days since her aneurysm surgery and she is still sleepy all the time. She seems to only be alert and have her eyes open for a few minutes at a time. I am wondering if this is normal and if it will just take time for her to be more alert?

I am so sorry that you are having to go through this. I had an unruptured aneurysm clipped in 2004, this is a long time ago and I didn't have major dramas after surgery, but I wanted to let you know that the brain is the slowest healing organ of all, and this insult to her brain will take a long time to recover from.

Don't give up hope, although it is slow healing it is a miraculous organ. Remember that she can probably hear you, even if she can't communicate so keep talking to her, telling her how much you love her and giving her lots of reasons to fight her way through this minefield that she is experiencing.

My thoughts and prayers are with you both - I think it is much harder for the people who are sitting next to the bed and waiting for things to happen than it is for the patient.

i had a ruptured aneyrysm 9-1-10 it was 3 weeks till i could sit up on the side of the bed with 2 helpers to hold me up. my doc said it is a miracle that i am able to walk with a cane and talk. this has busted me down worse than anything before and i have been hurt bad before. i take lots of pills to control things so i can feed myself and type slowly. give it lots of time the brain dont heal like a broken arm. i have days still that are bad but now i have days that i now concider good but i am not able to do lots of things so my only choice is to be greatfull for what i can do.after 9 months i know i am not healed but i can do more than when i came home from hospital. i will be a long time untill you have any idea how much better things will get. best wishes

I just had an anyeurism rupture on the 28th of May, 2011. I was in the ICU for 2 1/2 weeks. I could not even listen to anyone talk let alone have a light on in the room because my head hurt so bad. It is now 1 month and 2 days after the surgery. A coil was put in the ruptured anyeurism. Now, I feel great. Just got back from the gym where I did 45 min. of cardio. I feel very lucky. No dissabilities and I am alive. Everybody recovers different. I was in excellent physical shape because I am a personal trainer. The Doctor said that is what really saved me. So, just give your Mom some time. It is definately a painful experience. I am still taking pain killers to this day. Not many but, I am still taking them when my head hurts. Just have a little patience and, I am sure when she is ready she will be more active. When the head hurts it affects everything we do. try and remember that. I did not realize how much we depend on our head for all that we do. it was veryscary for me. I actually aasked the Doctor to kill me after 2 weeks because the pain was so severe and it would not stop. Thankfully he couldn't do that or else I could not respond to your post.
