Hi all - I am hoping I can gain some perspective on an issue my dad has been experiencing from other survivors or caregivers. First, some background - my dad had a brain aneurysm four years ago that severly impacted his s/t memory and some executive function. Although he has made great strides over the years, he seems to have developed an urge to constantly go to the restroom. It seems to be a compulsive act, since he does not actually 'go' to the bathroom every time - so I think he somehow finds comfort in this. It's been going on for little over a year now; has anyone experienced this? Any ideas for trying to divert the attention?
I appreciate any and all feedback. |

Hi Cstar,
Do you know for sure that your Dad does not have urinary urgency or frequency on these numerous trips to the BR?? Its very common for middle age men to have this and can be a sign of prostrate problems, I would mention this to his doc and ask him to order a simple PSA blood test, it checks the function of the prostrate for abnormailties or enlargement. It can for sure rule out any medical reason for the frequent BR trips, good luck with Dad, Ruthie |

Thanks for the response Ruthie - I did test all those things you mentioned with no success;but he is due for a physical and will be sure to keep them in mind! Christy

Hi Christy
I must admit, my thoughts ran along similar lines to Ruth's when I first read your post. It is possible that he is using the bathroom trip to compose his thoughts. I also wonder if he is feeling overwhelmed by sensory information and by being in the bathroom, without a lot of noise, colour and movement it is soothing and he can process information. Whatever the reason, he may just need someone to talk to about it. Cheers Lyn |
