Default dairy/cheese makes tics/ocd way worse?

Hey everyone, just wondering if anyone out has noticed if dairy/cheese makes their ocd/tics worse.

I'm 36 years old and I've had ocd/tics since I was about 8 years old, along with severe panic that's associated with the "what if" of whatever I'm obsessing about at the time.

It took me a while, but I discovered that when I lay off of cheese and dairy the ocd is much milder.

I also discovered wheat makes me lethargic and extremely irritable. I did an elimination diet for 5 days...not too long...but I felt great. I could even have caffeine without having my ocd flare up.

It's just hard for me to stay away from wheat and dairy all the time...since that's pretty much what all delicious food consists of in my opinion lol.

But I wonder if I could slowly get off my meds if I were able to stay off the allergen foods...or at least lower them.

Anyone with a similar experience with food allergens causing ocd flare ups?

Hello GJ1978,
Welcome to the NeuroTalk Support Groups.

Allergies or sensitivities to certain foods or chemicals in the environment can indeed contribute to an exacerbation of tics.

You could also check out the TS Forum here.

If you do a search in there for "allergies" just one example, you'll find many older posts regarding these issues. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/search.php

There are some excellent resources in the "Sticky" posts at the top of this forum too.

Finding Triggers for Tics & Tourette Syndrome

Modifications to diet or changing issues in our environment certainly do help some people with tics and ocd, but everyone is different so what may help one person isn't necessarily going to help another. It doesn't (in my opinion) mean that you're going to suddenly stop having tics or oc issues, but if you are allergic or sensitive to various chemicals or foods, it could mean that you can decrease your symptoms. A cold in the nose, for example, can exacerbate tics, or a sprained ankle. It's different for everyone.

If you are presently taking medications please don't stop them without talking to your doctor.
