Help Update on Chicken Pox and trip to hospital for son

Well it has made it through to her brothers.

My 18 yrold broke out this week on tuesday, he doesn't have them too bad.

My 14 yr old broke out with them on Wednesday and he does not have 1 piece of skin that isn't covered.

Josh (14) was so bad this morning he hurt to breathe.

We called telehealth which is like a health hotline that is staffed by RN's i wanted to know if it was normal to hurt so bad.

So she said to bring him in to the ER since it could be pneumonia.

We brought him in and luckily they said he will be fine and sent him home .

He is soo uncomfortable, we've done benadryl, calamine lotion.. tylenol for fevers.

He is really having a hard time with his groin area, he can't close his legs...

He isn't getting any sleep because they hurt... he also has them in his hair, and eyelids ... in his throat.

I feel soo badly for him.... poor guy..

He is going to try to switch beds with his brother since it's a pillow-top and maybe try to sleep with a pillow between his legs... hopefully that will work.

Yes... two teenagers with the chicken pox....

I keep trying to tell him that in a couple of days he won't be so uncomfortable but he just looks so sad....

Any ideas on how to keep him comfy?

Just maybe some relaxation type stuff. Breathing in (inhale) through his nose and purse his lips and blow out (exhale) . if he can about 3 times. it has a release effect, as in tension from the stress of all his discomfort and pain.

Sounds pretty bad. Poor little guy. maybe call his grandma and she can sing to him.

encouragement that it won't be this way forever, although it may be a while before he's healed from all those areas. some probably worse than others... probably worst on his most tender spots.

he probably can't keep from scratching. maybe a silkie something between his skin and his fingers(white if possible).

a fan for a little while, with a space heater close by for warmth.

if cool things sooths for a while, try a 1 part rubbing alcohol 3 part water in Ziploc bag (double bagged), freeze for a slushie effect. use a hand towel/folded pillow case (white) between bag and skin - maybe for a couple of minutes. might cool reddened spots a little bit.

Planning a birthday party or some family outing, even if it's for a few minutes at a time. Laughter helps.

Maybe -- check with a medical person -- a spring water or distilled water mist (spray bottle) to keep areas moist if that helps -- or maybe drier would work better. not sure...

and with so many areas please watch for any signs of infection.

he may need to turn quite often for pressure reasons.

I would think cotton sheets would be best, white if possible.

Clorox sanitizing wipes for everyone and things coming in contact with him. Preventive measures to minimize scarring.

May need antibiotics or something strong so he can heal from so many areas.

I sure pray he can find relief.

I found Aveeno Oatmeal packets to use in the bath and they were very helpful.

Sure sounds like a miserable time and I hope he starts to feel somewhat better soon.

We've done the oatmeal baths... i have a soaker tub which comes in handy since he's pretty tall.

But he can't sit down... he has some pox on his bottom and in the creases...

You just feel so helpless... i just want him to be comfortable so he can get some rest.

Oh dear....I really feel for you and your family.

My daughter got chicken pox for Christmas when she was six years old.

I tried Oatmeal & Calomine lotion, but that only made the itch worse!

I don't know if it's avilable in the USA, but the thing that gave her relief was Pinetarsal. It smells like the tar they put on the roads, in fact it stinks.... but it worked! It completely eased that terrible itch for her.

I put in her bath water, then dabbed every sore with it. My DD would ask me to put that "smelly stuff" on her when she started to itch again, and I'd dab it on undiluted from the bottle.

I hope your children soon recover.

another day behind you all, hope he's on the mend.

what about the old heat lamps they used to use for open wounds and incisions? I'm learning about lights. they can have a therapuetic effect. OBGYNs used to use them often.

He has gotten more pox overnight.

He has so many in the groin area, he is in soo much pain.

He can't sit because everything rubs against it.

He doesn't sleep, the benadryl helps with the itching but now he's dealing with inflamation in the groin area.

He's not itchy there but it is extremely inflamed.

I've even tried to have him use some zinc oxide cream in the hopes that it can help to dry it up faster and help with the inflamation.

The oatmeal baths aren't helping they just make him sting more and since he can't sit he is really frustrated.

I really don't know what more to do... he is in soo much pain.

I'm so sorry. It sounds just awful for him. You must be so worried.

Is he taking anything for pain relief. Sounds as if he needs to take something like tylenol or other otc pain med BUT NOT ASPIRIN. I'd probably go back to the doctor anyway and she/he might need to prescribe some other type of oral antihistamine or something like that to help with the pain.

Just really keep an eye out for high fever or really bad headaches and sensitivity to light too. If he gets any of those he needs to go back to the doctor immediately.

I believe that chicken pox can be quite severe for some teens and adults when they get it.

I had shingles in the middle of last year and it drove me insane at the time. I feel for him. Hope he's feeling more comfortable soon.

p.s. That pinetarsol that Koala mentioned is a really good product and I used that when my two had chickenpox as little children. I'm not sure if you have that there??

misshayleesmom,
He sounds as if he needs to be seen by the doctor from what you've written.

Exclamation In the US

anyone with Chicken pox this severe is given

Zovirax or Valtrex....you were not offered this?

There is no excuse to suffer. There are lidocaine mouth washes, and lidocaine topical gels for the skin.

You have my greatest sympathy. Chicken pox unrestrained can lead to encephalitis!

If you can, call your doctor and demand antiviral treatment!

Clean the skin with hydrogen peroxide antiseptic strength.
The pox weakens the immune system, and makes infection more likely. Anything that starts to look infected, seek medical attention and antibiotics immediately.
