Default first neurologist appointment

Have tonsillar ectopia of 5mm. With a range of symptoms. Gave my doc all my info and at the start of the appointment he tried to tell me that it isn't serious unless the tonsils are in the centimetre range. After going over everything he said it is possible that I do have chiari but he is reluctant to diagnose it because then I would have to be sent on to a neurosurgeon and they will just want to do surgery. So I was diagnosed with neck pain and other specified congenital anomalies of the brain. He told me for now that he wants to try to treat the headaches and neck pain alone. He put me on cyclobenzaprine and fioricet and ordered me to go to omt. I was wondering if this is normal and if these treatments have ever helped anyone?
