I was diagnosed with Aspergers when I was eight and I see and hear things. Could it be because of me autism or could it be the result of having meningitis 3 time? I have not been able to see a doctor and was hoping someone could help.

Hello Joycelynn777: I'm certainly no expert with regard to autism. However, from what I know of it there would be no direct relationship. From what I understand seeing & hearing things in a person with autism is thought to be the result of stress related to social anxiety. I cannot speak to the question of your having had meningitis. The link below is to a discussion on The National Autistic Society website regarding the relationship between autism & seeing & hearing things:

Are you taking any medications?
If so they might be the cause or a factor.. Or you could have a secondary medical/emotional/mental condition.. I suggest a follow up with a professional to find out for sure..

Hi Joycelynn777
My partner is a psychologist who has worked with people who are on the Autism Spectrum Disorder range. Her comment is that it is very unusual for people with ASD to have auditory or visual hallucinations. She also (echoing Jo*mar) suggested that seeing a health professional about your hallucinations is a good plan.

I have hallucinations and aspergers too. It's really hard to break out of the hallucinations because of my autistic inability to break focus on them. I spend whole days, even weeks focused on communicating with the voices until I accomplish some sort of negotiation with them. I hear up to 7 voices at once with a background of 100-200 "follower" voices, which echo everything they say. The best I could describe it is a democracy chamber like in star wars the phantom menace, where the leaders negotiate something and the followers vote on it. It's very interesting to me and makes me feel like I'm an important decision maker/ negotiator/ diplomat. I've always fantasized about being an international diplomat.
I've imagined that my voices were due to when I was drugged at the airport loading job that I had in 2007. I imagined that I was a member of the CIA and that this was what all low level CIA agents went through ** Another reason I imagined was telepathy, because I had experimented with pagan parephenalia in 2009 when a friend got me interested in it.** I have never heard of any scientific explanation for hearing voices. People tell me to talk to my psychiatrist but I've been on almost every drug on the market and none of them helped get rid of the voices. The only thing that helps me get rid of the voices is to get really emotional for instance during a life changing traumatic event, hence I seek trauma most of the time.**. The only other way to get rid of the voices temporarily is to "win" a negotiation with them, which is part of the reason why I spend so much time and effort in them, to get them to go away. Hi jbartram_7
Welcome to NeuroTalk . My understanding is that hallucinations are rare in people with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Getting a referral to a clinical psychologist who has experience of working with people with ASD would be good plan. Best wishes.
